Since a firmware update a release or 2 ago some updates download then proceed to say "copying This is the first I've heard of any issue and I've been in all of the beta versions for 5. Downloads and installs are maxing my connection and install without mentioning any "copy" process. Is Overwatch the only game affected? How large is the update? Is there more than one update downloading or installing at the time?
Are your games installed on internal or external HDD? Yep I see this now as well. Now installs say "Copying" and it takes way longer than it used to on every game, and some games take an insane amount of time.
Destiny 2 in particular, it took about 25 minutes for the most recent patch. No rhyme or reason at all to why it is now doing this, but it is way way longer than it ever has been. Overwatch is the only game I'm playing at the moment and have noticed updates for on PS4, don't think I've noticed any others getting patched in this time.
It's on an external HDD, thought that may have been the issue but friend said he was getting the same message Thought I was going crazy at first install times are bonkers now. Is Destiny on a external HDD? Nope on the internal. Same exact thing is happening with my friend as well. Also internal.
So it looks like it happens on both internal and external installs. Sweet just wanted to narrow that don't wasn't sure if my mate could tell or not since I hooked up an external for him. Only article I've found so far after some searching today since got another game doing it today didn't end up having time to play by the time this was done.
Think people having the issue are having a hard time finding complaint threads or reporting about it or then it even coming up in google search results with the keywords "PS4 Copying Updates". I have just spoken with their support. Essentially, what Sony calls "copying" appears to be an extra safe way of installing smaller-than-normal update files. As explained by Quora user Andrew Fox , the copying process seems to be a side effect of Sony sending out bandwidth-saving, small update files.
If a game has a 20GB file, but only 5MB of data within it needs to be changed, Fox said, a developer can just send out that 5MB of data over the internet and let the PS4 to do the rest. The unfortunate consequence of this bandwidth preservation is that, in order to install the 5MB change, the PS4 needs to rewrite i. This process makes it as if the entire file had been downloaded fresh, reducing the risk of the 5MB patch causing problems with any old, conflicting data.
This is how to make PS4 download faster as the write speeds of that drive are, in almost all cases, much faster than those of the stock PS4 drive. So you either suck it up and wait, or, you replace your internal hard drive.
Once the update has been downloaded, if you restart your PS4 at that point, when it boots back up again, the update will be completed. In addition, the speed of update process will vary from game to game.
Do you know how to update your PS4 console? This post shows you how to update PS4 console automatically and manually. This method is the most effective method. SSD drives usually have nice random read and write performance IOPS , which is very important to software operation, including games. But please note that SSD drives can't eliminate PS4 copying update file process, although it might shorten it.
Besides, before you decide to switch to SSD drives, I recommend you to check the interface that your PS4 console uses.
